What Is The Opera Grand Rapids Chorus?
The chorus serves provides Opera Grand Rapids with a pool of talent from which to cast chorus positions for each of its productions. In many ways it is the heart of Opera Grand Rapids, providing a critical element of each one of our productions.To become a member of the chorus, you must audition and be selected by Artistic Director Robert Lyall, or Chorus Master Duane Davis. Auditions for the chorus are held once a year, usually in the summer.

How Do I Audition?
Appointments for chorus auditions are strongly suggested. During an audition you should choose to sing a piece that will is a good reflection of your talent both as a singer and a performer. Your selection may be from the standard opera repertoire, Broadway, a hymn or anything else you choose. Auditioning in a foreign language is always appreciated, but is not necessary. The piece you choose to perform must be memorized. During chorus auditions, OGR will provide an accompanist for you.

Are Chorus Members Always Cast For A Production?
Becoming a chorus member does not guarantee you a singing role with Opera Grand Rapids. Prior to each opera, a letter is sent to chorus members outlining the commitment required. Available chorus members then contact the opera offices. Chorus Master Duane Davis then selects the singers from the list of available members based on the vocal demands of the production. Please note, it is possible to be available for a production and not be chosen to perform.
